When I first saw this atrocious story, it was so outlandish that I truly believed it was fake or some kind of propaganda. Then I did some research, and found the sickening story on CNN, BBC News and Newsweek. And sadly, this it appears that this tragic tale is indeed true.
On Thursday, an Islamic State militant killed his own mother in a public execution in the city of Raqqa. The abhorrent story of a member of ISIS killing his mother was first reported in the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a site that documents human rights abuses in the Syrian Civil War.
The murderer is 20-year-old Ali Saqr, and he executed his 45-year-old mother Leena Al-Qasem in front of an audience of hundreds of people outside a post office building in Raqqa, where she was employed.
The reason the son butchered his own mother to death was because she asked him to leave ISIL and flee the city of Raqqa, Islamic State’s de facto capital, before coalition forces kill all members of the terrorist organization. Instead of ignoring her, he charged her with apostasy, the abandonment of a religious belief. This is considered an extremely serious crime and is punishable by death in Islamic State’s bastardized version of Sharia Law.
It was not clear on whether Saqr shot her dead on the orders of his ISIS superiors or of his own volition.
