A man had to be airlifted to a hospital after two pit bulls attacked him and his Jack Russell terrier on Wednesday.

Video captures the disturbing moment that two pit bulls maul a man after trying to protect his dog. The victim, John Brady, was walking with his dog on Avalon Pier on Santa Catalina Island in California when they were mauled by the pit bulls. Brady attempted to protect his dog, Josh, and the pit bulls attacked him so severely that they ripped out a chunk of his calf as well as biting both of his arms.

“All I did is lift my dog off the ground and I was being chewed on instantly,” Brady told KTLA. “I knew I was going to die. I was screaming for help, and everybody was just watching … until the last second.”

At one point, Brady pulled out a pocket knife and began stabbing the dogs.

“It was so scary,” he recalled, tearing up. “I was just face to the ground, and just being chewed on by … I couldn’t even call them dogs.”

Eventually, Avalon Harbor Patrol officers were able to pull the dogs off of him. Brady was airlifted to UCLA Harbor Medical Center.

WARNING: The video is graphic.

“They attacked my little dog, Josh,” Brady said. “Almost killed him, almost killed me.”

“My dog is alive, and I put my body over him because he’s my best friend in the world,” Brady said.

Brady received skin grafts on both legs, and describing one leg and being nearly “chewed off.” He will have to undergo numerous surgeries. Josh underwent surgery for a huge gash, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

A GoFundMe has been set up to pay for the medical bills for Brady and his dog. The campaign has raised over $12,000 of its goal of $20,000.

The owner of the dogs agreed to have both of them euthanized.
