While those are all fantastic guesses, the tower is a little more boring. The structure is called the Long Lines building at 33 Thomas Street in Manhattan and was originally built by AT&T in 1974.
According to Atlas Obscura:
The sky fortress was originally created to house AT&T’s carrier exchanges for their long distance telephone switches and equipment. Today it continues in that purpose, while also storing a portion of the company’s datacenter processing. This ephemeral element of the technological infrastructure has been deemed so important that the building is able to survive nuclear fallout, and exist off-grid for up to two weeks without issue.
The ominous building features 29 floors, three basement levels, and enough food to last 1,500 people two weeks in the event of a catastrophe. It is also said to be a spy hub for the NSA in the middle of New York City. So maybe this eerie tower is even scarier than first imagined.
