Recently, Colorado Buffaloes football hit a milestone when they went over 1,000,000 followers on Instagram. So, what other schools are killing it on social media? Let’s find out.

Follower counts are as of Thursday, October 12, 2023

The program with the most wins in college history features a huge fan
base that stretches coast-to-coast. Those fans pack the largest stadium in the United States, Michigan Stadium, more commonly known as the ‘Big House’, every Saturday to the tune of 110,000 people.

It’s a big year for Michigan, as they have a great shot at their first undisputed national championship since 1948.

The pride and joy of the Volunteer State, there’s nothing bigger in the state than Tennessee Volunteers football. There may not be a more rabid and loyal fan base in the country, as they stuck with the Vols through some lean years in the 2000s and 2010s.

That’s paid off, as third-year coach Josh Heupel has Tennessee back as one of the nation’s best twenty programs.

8. Texas Longhorns (600k)

Many will be surprised that arguably the sport’s leading financial power isn’t higher on the list. But, 600,000 Instagram followers is nothing to scoff at.

Longhorn fans can be described as fair-weather fans, but that’s not the case this year. Games at Darrell K. Royal Stadium have had a ton of energy this year, as the Longhorns are a bona fide national title contender even after their heartbreaking loss to Oklahoma in week 6.

7. Oregon Ducks (603k)

Unlike the other teams on this list, the Ducks are not a historical power. But, their emergence as a power in the last twenty years plus their partnership with Nike has turned them into household names in the sport.

It’s hard to say how many followers are genuine Duck fans or are those that just love all the cool Nike gear they post all the time. But, it’s one of the most fun team accounts to follow.

6. Clemson Tigers (760k)

No college football brand has benefitted more from the last decade than the Clemson Tigers. The team went from being known as chokers to one of the sport’s top powers. That’s what four national title game appearances and two national titles will do for you.

And, that’s definitely helped them increase their fan base and following drastically. Clemson is not exactly a big school with a large built-in alumni fan base. But, they’ve attracted a lot of casual fans and have probably converted some University of South Carolina fans, as well.

5. Georgia Bulldogs (949K)

The two-time defending national champions and consensus best program in the country has a huge and loyal following. And, that has turned into having nearly a million Instagram followers.

When your fans are loyal enough to dress up in full body paint with spikes and are frequently barking at people, that’s going to translate to people passionate enough to follow your Instagram.

4. Colorado Buffaloes (1M)

The Colorado Buffaloes would not have even sniffed this list at this time last year. But, That’s certainly changed since they hired Deion Sanders as head coach in December 2022.

Now, they’re one of the biggest draws in all of sports, with huge television ratings for every game. There’s no doubt that Colorado has the most casual fans liking their Instagram, but that won’t bother Colorado at all.

3. LSU Tigers (1M)

The pride of Louisiana has some of the best fans in the country, and they’re showing out for their beloved Tigers on Instagram.

There’s a reason why the game day atmosphere in Death Valley is so revered. Tiger fans are known for partying all day and night as they prepare to cheer on LSU with some of the most creative (and vulgar) chants in all of college football.

2. Ohio State Buckeyes (1.1M)

“The World-Famous Ohio State Buckeyes”, as Fox Sports’ play-by-play man Gus Johnson calls them, arguably has the nation’s biggest fanbase. It seems like there’s at least one Buckeyes fan in every sports bar in America on a college football Saturday.

Buckeye games routinely dominate the television ratings, so it would make sense that they nearly have the most Instagram followers in the country.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide (1.2M)

The Alabama Crimson Tide have been the dominant force in college football in the Instagram era. So, it makes sense that they would come on top of this list.

They’ve always had a very passionate fan base in the state of Alabama, but a lot of people with no affiliation to the school or state came on board to become dedicated fans of Nick Saban and his program.
