The pro cycling world is in a state of shock and mourning on Friday after the passing of 19-year-old Finlay Tarling during the eighth stage of Volta a Portugal.
Tarling, who raced for the NSN Development Team, was struck and killed by an oncoming vehicle that had illegally entered the race route.
The eighth of 10 scheduled stages in the race was postponed following the accident and eventually canceled. It is unknown at this time if the final two stages of the event will be completed.

Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed.

Volta a Portugal Confirms Passing Of Finlay Tarling
Shortly after Tarling’s passing, the Volta a Portugal organisation and Portuguese Cycling Federation issued a statement addressing the incident.
“The organisation of the 87th Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta Jogos Santa Casa deeply regrets to announce the death of British rider Finlay Tarling, of NSN Development Team, following a serious accident during Stage 8 of the race, between Melgaco and Fafe,” the statement read.
“At this moment of profound shock and sadness, the Volta a Portugal organisation and the Portuguese Cycling Federation extend their deepest condolences to Finlay Tarling’s family, his teammates, NSN Development Team and all of his friends and loved ones.”
Tarling’s older brother, Josh, is renowned as one of the world’s best time trialists, having taken bronze at the 2023 World Championships and finished fourth in the event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Sadly, this kind of tragedy is not new to the cycling world, which lost 26-year-old Swiss rider Gino Mader following a crash in the 2023 Tour de Suisse.
