Spain Park thought it had defeated Hartselle during the high school baseball championship in Alabama but the play was ruled as a foul ball. The Jaguars had to stop their celebration, regroup, and continue.
They went on to lose.
It was a fitting end to one of the most chaotic high school baseball playoffs of all-time. The eventual runners-up fell victim to a similar fate to the one that kept their season alive during the semifinals.
The Alabama high school baseball championship went to extra innings.
Spain Park High School is located in Hoover, Alabama— right outside of Birmingham. Established in 2001, it enrolls approximately 1,500 students in Grades 9-12. Hartselle High School is located in the northern half of the state. It enrolls approximately 1,200 students in Grades 9-12.
The Jaguars and the Tigers both play high school baseball on the Class 6A level of AHSAA competition. Spain Park ranked No. 2 in the state. Hartselle ranked No. 3. They met in the two-game state championship series on Wednesday and Thursday.
Game 1 came down to the bottom of the seventh. Hartselle walked it off with a deep fly ball to center.
Impressive walk-off win for Hartselle baseball.

Bottom 7th, tied 8-8, they load up the bases. Then Cain Falciani calls game with a huge hit.

Spain Park had an opportunity to flip the script during Game 2. The Jaguars had the bases loaded with only one out in the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied at 1-1. They struck out for out No. 2. They, unlike the Tigers on Wednesday, flew out to center for out No. 2.
The game went to the top of the eighth tied at one.
Spain Park thought it defeated Hartselle.
Although Hartselle was able to escape the bases loaded jam, Spain Park thought it had won the game in regulation. The Jaguars knocked a high-bouncing ball right back to the pitcher. The Tigers fielded the ball cleanly and threw over to first base.
Meanwhile, Spain Park sent its baserunner around third. Hartselle threw home for a play at the plate. The runner appeared to beat the tag. Game over.
The Jaguars celebrated as though they had won… but they had not. The umpire ruled that the ball was foul because it either hit off the batter and/or bounced inside the batter’s box before it reached the infield. Everything from that point on did not matter. It was a dead play.
It looked like the batter knew it was the right call. He did not run down to first.
Headed to the 8th but not before Spain Park thought it had the game won. Umpires came together and ruled this a foul ball. It’s 1-1. pic.twitter.com/ObuFPsqEVJ

Both teams had to reset. The game ultimately continued to the eighth with the aforementioned strikeout and fly out. The Tigers went on to win the Game 2 by a final score of 2-1 to sweep the series. They won their second-straight state championship and 11th state title in program history.

The Class 6A high school baseball playoffs were chaotic. Not only did Spain Park think it had won the game in the bottom of the seventh, it only made the championship series because of a retroactive forfeiture based on a pitch counting error in the semifinals.
