The WNBA is a unique league in the sense that some of its most popular players are far from its best, with Sophie Cunningham being a prime example. Opinions are also split on Angel Reese, as well.
Despite the fact that Sophie Cunningham is averaging 8.6 points per game this season, she’s one of the WNBA’s most popular players, at least as far as Instagram is concerned, as only Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark have more followers than she does.
Then there’s Reese, who, despite being an All-Star in her first three WNBA seasons, has a clunky style of play that splits opinion among basketball fans. Reese is the most followed player in the league, with over 5.2 million Instagram followers (both Clark and Cunningham have over four million).

On Thursday, August 19, both Reese and Cunningham had unique statistical outings, albeit for entirely different reasons.
In the Atlanta Dream’s blowout win over the Los Angeles Sparks, Reese became the first player in WNBA history to record 20+ points, 10+ rebounds, and 8+ assists without missing a single shot.
Cunningham, on the other hand, scored zero points on 0-4 shooting in 15 minutes in the Indiana Fever’s loss to the Dallas Wings.

With about a month remaining in the WNBA’s 2026 regular season, both the Indiana Fever and Atlanta Dream look headed for the playoffs. As of August 21, the Fever would be the #3 seed while the Dream would be the #5 seed.
If the two teams were to finish as the #4 and #5 seeds, they would face off in the first round of the WNBA Playoffs. Given the attention paid to Clark, Cunningham and Reese this season, that series could potentially be one of the most viewed and discussed in the league’s history.
