Australian Athletes Reportedly Refuse To Stay In The Near ‘Uninhabitable’ Olympic Village In Rio

Welp, here we are again. Another day, another piece of news about how much of a disaster the Rio Olympics are going to turn out to be. It’s getting to the point where, if I haven’t heard any news at the point in the day, I just assume I missed something and thus just google ‘Rio Olympics’ and see what I missed. “Oh wow, it’s 4:30 already and I haven’t heard any news about the Olympics yet?” *googles ‘Rio Olympics’* “Oh, there it is. They found more dead bodies.”

Today’s news comes in the form that some athletes refuse to stay in the ‘uninhabitable’ Olympic village that Rio has designed for them.

Via Sydney Morning Herald:

“The Australian Olympic Committee confirmed on Sunday evening that the athletes’ village has been deemed uninhabitable in the short term due to significant plumbing and electrical concerns.

It is unclear if and when competitors will be able to move in, with the International Olympic Committee is set to undertake “stress tests” to deal with serious issues with plumbing and fire safety.

AOC chef de mission Kitty Chiller confirmed late on Sunday night (AEST) that Australian athletes would not be moving into the village, having hoped to do so on Sunday.

“For over a week now AOC staff have been working long hours to get our section of the village ready for our athletes,” Chiller said in a statement. “Problems include blocked toilets, leaking pipes, exposed wiring, darkened stairwells where no lighting has been installed and dirty floors in need of a massive clean. In operations areas water has come through the ceiling resulting in large puddles on the floor around cabling and wiring.”

Chiller said the situation came to a head on Saturday night (Brazil time).

“We decided to do a “stress test” where taps and toilets were simultaneously turned on in apartments on several floors to see if the system could cope once the athletes are in-house. “The system failed. Water came down walls, there was a strong smell of gas in some apartments and there was “shorting” in the electrical wiring.””

In addition to every room literally leaking piss, shit and gas all over the place, but they also are about as barren as a college dorm room. They get two twin bed, two outlets and like a shitty portable closet.

And the bathrooms are not fit for two athletes preparing for international competition.

Honestly, I don’t even have a closing paragraph for these Rio posts anymore. It’s going to be a disaster. People may die. Our athletes may end up living on the street of Brazil for two weeks. I really don’t know. We’ll see when the time comes.
