New Mexico State football has been on the rise since hiring Jerry Kill in 2022, but that does not help to make Auburn’s loss look any better. The Tigers should not have lost to the Aggies at home. They were more than 20-point favorites. They paid $1.85 million to lose an inferior Conference USA program.
It was embarrassing.
Hugh Freeze lost to Kill in back-to-back years in games that he was expected to win. Auburn put up less than 220 total yards of offense, scored just 10 points and lost by 21.
New Mexico State quarterback Diego Pavia even suplexed a cornerback after throwing a pick.
The whole night could not have gone much worse for the Tigers.
If an SEC team losing a buy game at home wasn’t embarrassing enough, the stark contrast between football facilities at both schools makes it look even worse. They are not on the same level.
This is not to say that the infrastructure in Las Cruces is bad. It just pales in comparison to the amenities in eastern Alabama.

The stadium is gorgeous, but not new:
Meanwhile, Auburn just tricked out a $92 million facility with all of the bells and whistles.
College football is awesome because any team can win any game at any point in time. Everybody loves an upset, and the entire world rallied behind the Aggies on Saturday.
That doesn’t mean that Freeze and the Tigers get a hall pass for one of the more embarrassing Power Five losses in recent history. They paid a small fortune to get beat by a team with facilities that don’t even come close to the luxuries that are provided to their players.
You simply hate to see it. (No you don’t!)
