Nicknames are a pretty integral part of hockey culture, and most NHL players have an alternative moniker in the locker room. That includes Ducks winger Beckett Sennecke, who earned a new one after inadvertently posting a picture on Instagram that was obviously not meant to be viewed by the public.

Hockey isn’t the only sport where players are frequently referred to by a nickname by fans and fellow athletes alike, but having one is common to the point where it’s strange if you don’t manage to earn one.

It doesn’t appear that any linguists have attempted to do a deep dive into the phenomenon, but guys around the NHL are well-versed in a culture where an “-s,” “-ey,” or “-er” commonly gets incorporated into their first or last name to create a new one that their teammates usually refer to them by.

However, there are also some slightly more creative ones.

For example, Canadiens defenseman Arber Xhekaj is known as “WiFi” because his last name looks like a password you’d encounter on the back of an internet router. As Senators goalie Linus Ullmark notes in the video above, you can also get one like “Sprinkles” over a random moment or quirk that can follow you for the rest of your career.

There’s no telling if that will end up being the case with one man who currently plays for the Ducks, but he has earned one due to an unfortunate mix-up on Instagram.

The Ducks have started referring to Beckett Sennecke as “Macaroner” after the dessert was featured in an Instagram post he didn’t mean to share with the world

Countless people have harnessed social media to further their romantic pursuits, and many of them won’t think twice about sending intimate pictures after sliding into someone’s DMs.

There are obviously some risks that come with going that route, as you need to make sure that private content is exclusive to your private messages and take steps to ensure you don’t accidentally blast it out on your main account.

However, Ducks forward Beckett Sennecke fell victim to that particular mishap earlier this week, as some fans who decided to check out his Instagram story in the wake of his team’s win over the Canucks on Tuesday were treated to a picture of him lying in a bed in his birthday suit while covering up a certain aspect of his anatomy with a box of macarons.

The photo (which also suggested he’s dealing with a knee issue due to the brace on his right leg) was quickly deleted, and it apparently came to the attention of his teammates based on the scene in the locker room after their win over the Oilers on Thursday night.

Roger McQueen was tasked with handing out the Mighty Ducks-era Teemu Selanne helmet that’s being presented to the best player of the game this season, which was ultimately awarded to Pavel Mintyukov after he notched a couple of goals and an assist in the victory.

Sennecke also got a shoutout after posting the same line, although McQueen referred to him as “Marcaroner” while dishing out his praise.

Fantastic stuff.
