Following a week of reporting on Bill Belichick’s future — or, rather, lack thereof — as the head coach at the University of North Carolina, the College Gameday crew naturally discussed the story on Saturday, October 11. And Belichick himself was apparently watching.
During the middle of their discussion about Bill Belichick’s rocky start to his tenure as UNC’s head coach, the legendary former New England Patriots head coach called Kirk Herbstreit while he was speaking.
Herbstreit held his phone up to the rest of the crew, prompting Pat McAfee to push Herbstreit to answer the phone, saying “He has to be watching right now — that’s literally Bill Belichick calling Kirk Herbstreit right now.”

Earlier this week, the floodgates opened on Belichick’s UNC tenure, with multiple people with connections to the program speaking to reporters and painting an ugly picture of the current situation.
“It’s an unstructured mess,” an unnamed source told local North Carolina outlet WRAL. “There’s no culture, no organization. It’s a complete disaster.”
“We don’t have one pro player on the whole roster,” one person within the program also told The Athletic in a similarly damning report.
Further reports indicate that Belichick may already be eyeing an exit strategy via a $1 million buyout if he can find a “soft landing” with another job in college football or media.
UNC, who currently sit at 2-3 on the season following an embarrassing 38-10 loss to Clemson, have a bye week this week and will resume their 2025 schedule on Friday, October 17 with a road matchup against the California Golden Bears.
