The case can be made that the New England Patriots are the worst team in the National Football League this season, which is a shocking thing to say about a Bill Belichick-coached team.
Following Sunday’s pitiful 10-7 loss to the New York Giants, the Patriots record now sits at 2-9, which is the second-worst record in the league behind only the 1-10 Carolina Panthers.
A common theme of the 2023 campaign for the Pats has been their ineptitude on offense, particularly in the passing games, due to their lack of both a legitimate NFL passer and any game-changing talents at wide receiver.
As a result, Belichick has spent much of the last few weeks flip-flopping between Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe, desperately trying to jumpstart New England’s drowning offense. And neither has gotten the job done.
Things are so bad for the Patriots, in fact, that Belichick is now having to relitigate why the organization decided to take Jones with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft — a decision that clearly has not worked.
Making an appearance on The Greg Hill Show on Monday, the 71-year-old Belichick was not only asked about his decision to select Jones but was pushed on whether or not it was his call or owner Robert Kraft’s.
Belichick gave a classically terse response, simply saying “Organizationally, we thought it was the right thing to do.”

Prior to being benched against the Giants, Jones completed 12 of 21 passes for 89 yards and two interceptions.
Overall this season, Jones has completed 65% of his passes for 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
In their final six games of the season, the Patriots — who will likely have a Top 5 draft pick next season — will take on the Los Angeles Chargers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, and New York Jets.
At this time, Belichick’s status for next season is unclear, although most reports seem to be pointing toward an exit from New England.
