Brennan Ramirez is no longer a member of the college basketball program at Boise State. He was removed from the roster to make room for Lamar Washington, a fifth-year transfer who is not currently eligible.

His career came to an early end as a result of the removal.

Now more than ever, college basketball is a business and he Broncos had to make a difficult business decision. It does not make the situation any less unfortunate for a former team manager who earned his way onto the roster through hard work.

Who is Lamar Washington?

At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Lamar Washington is on his fourth different team in five years. The former four-star recruit committed to Texas Tech out of Compass Prep in the Class of 2022. He spent two years in Lubbock.

Washington, a versatile wing player, averaged 3.8 points and 1.6 rebounds in 12.1 minutes per game in 62 games over two seasons with the Red Raiders and made three starts as a true freshman. And then it was off to the transfer portal as a rising junior.

Washington transferred down to play at Pacific. He averaged 13.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.7 steals in 34.3 minutes per game as a starter in all 33 games. It was a huge breakout year.

Washington re-entered the transfer portal as a rising senior. He averaged 9.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 28.5 minutes per game at Georgia Tech in 2025-26.

As things currently stand, Washington is out of eligibility. However, because the NCAA recently granted its athletes with a fifth year of eligibility, his status remains unresolved.

Washington is one of the Class of 2022 athletes who filed for an additional fifth season of eligibility in court. Earlier this week, Washington withdrew his name from a lawsuit in Georgia and tried to join the Wheeler v. NCAA case in Texas. He was hoping to receive temporary relief that would allow him to compete. That is not what happened.

The Lone Star State judge denied temporary restraining orders for Washington and other players who had previously pursued similar eligibility claims in other states. The judge cited a lack of jurisdiction.

As a result, Lamar Washington remains ineligible to compete during the 2026-27 college basketball season. He must now find another legal avenue and obtain a subsequent favorable ruling to become eligible.

Boise State kicked its walk-on manager off of the college basketball team.

Although Lamar Washington is not allowed to play as of this writing, he is still expected to play an important role for Boise State in 2026-27 if he can become eligible. The former Texas Tech, Pacific and Georgia Tech guard signed with the Broncos during the offseason.

College basketball teams are only allowed to roster 15 players. Boise State already had 15 players on its roster for 2026-27, not including Washington. The numbers created an unfortunate problem for the Broncos. Someone needed to be cut to make room for Washington in the chance that he becomes eligible.

That “someone” is Brennan Ramirez. The redshirt senior began his college basketball career as a team manager. He was added to the roster two years ago as a walk-on, played in seven games over the last two seasons, and was named as a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete in each of his two seasons on the roster. This was going to be his final season at Boise State.

Unfortunately, Ramirez will not suit up for the Broncos in 2026-27. According to Bronco Nation News publisher B.J. Rains, he will “remain with the team in some capacity but his official role is still being figured out.”

Business is business. Boise State has to do what it has to do to put itself in the best position to win games. And, if he does become eligible, Washington is more important to that goal than an end-of-bench player in terms of Xs and Os. With that being said, would be a real shame if Ramirez was removed from the roster and Washington never sees the court.
