The 24-year-old University of Missouri-St. Louis student was selected to shoot for $50,000 Sunday before the Missouri Valley Conference championship game.
All he had to do was make a layup, a free throw, a three-pointer and a half-court shot in 24 seconds. After hitting the layup and free throw, Permann sprinted to the midcourt stripe and fired in a bomb.
He erupted in celebration and the crowd went wild.
The only problem? He forgot about that pesky three-point try.
Realizing his mistake, he hurriedly got up a few attempts, none of which found the mark.
As a consolation, he received four tickets for life to the MVC tournament and hotel passes for next year’s event.
Remarkably, he took the disappointment in stride.
“Either way, it's been awesome. I just can't believe I made it,” said Permann, whose main experience with basketball is playing in an intramural league once a week. He'll have the memory, anyway. Just not $50,000.
That is not how I would have handled it, but clearly he’s a much better person than I am.
