Kyle Whittingham says Bryce Underwood's job is not guaranteed.
The Michigan football team nearly lost its season opener to Western Michigan in Ann Arbor last Saturday. Quarterback Bryce Underwood’s play was an immediate concern.
The passer struggled mightily in his 2026 debut. He was bailed out by an answered prayer on a game-winning Hail Mary. Despite getting the win, his future under center is not guaranteed.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham spoke on what he expects to see at the position moving forward. He said that Underwood’s status as the Wolverines‘ starting quarterback is “not infinite.”
Bryce Underwood is QB1… for now.
Whittingham addressed the media this week ahead of a matchup vs. Oklahoma. The head coach was asked about Underwood’s future under center.
“He’s our QB right now,” Whittingham said while addressing the media. “It’s not infinite. At some point, we’ve got to turn the corner. We’ve got to see improvement…
“It’s unfortunate and disappointing, because we see him every day and he was very sharp all through fall camp. I don’t really have an explanation. I hope we see improvements from Game 1 to Game 2.”
Whittingham noted that no players’ starting roles are “concrete.” They have to perform each week, Underwood included.
The quarterback, however, is under a larger microscope. Underwood plays the most important position on the field. Michigan paid $12 million to land its signal caller.
The investment, to this point, has not been profitable. The Wolverines were nearly embarrassed in their ’26 debut. Underwood completed less than 55% of his attempts for 170 yards with a touchdown and a pick. He also scored on the ground.
Despite the subpar performance, he seemed unaware that his job could be lost. His coach hasn’t spoken to him about a potential benching.

The quarterback was asked about Whittingham’s comments during a Wednesday afternoon press conference. He was completely unaware of his head coach’s remarks.
“That’s cool, I didn’t see that,” he said.
It’s not ideal to have your quarterback learn that he could be demoted through the media. You’d prefer him hear if from the horse’s mouth.
With that said, Whittingham is not yet ready to give up on Underwood. You can even spin Underwood’s response into a positive.
There have been no discussions about a demotion, meaning it is not currently on the radar. Whittingham’s comment was more or less a challenge to his team. Nothing is guaranteed.
The coach expects to see a jump from Week 1 to Week 2. If it happens, the benching talks will die down.
If not, there could be a decision to make, and Whittingham’s hypothetical might become reality.
