Jon Gruden was a Tampa Bay Buccaneers hero after leading the team to their first Lombardi Trophy in XXXVIII back in 2003 against the Oakland Raiders, the other franchise he coached in his career. That win was enough for Gruden to get inducted into the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Ring of Honor in 2017.
But, after uflattering emails that included comments that were viewed as insensitive to women, minorities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and a vicious insult of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell that forced Gruden to resign from his second stint with the Raiders, the Buccaneers removed him from the ring of honor. But, on Thursday, they changed course and will be reinstating him to the Ring of Honor.
Gruden, who has recently served as a consultant with the New Orleans Saints in 2023 and is now working with Barstool Sports, has been getting some buzz in NFL coaching searches lately. It’s hard to say if anyone is willing to take a risk on him given not just the emails that were exposed as part of an investigation into the Washington Commanders in 2021, but also because he wasn’t all that good in his last stint as a head coach. He was 22-31 in his three-plus years in his second stint with the Raiders.
But, attitudes towards Gruden has definitely softened a little bit. That’s led to the Buccaneers making the choice to bring Jon Gruden back into the Ring of Honor.

Jon Gruden was initially inducted into the Buccaneers Ring of Honor based on his many accomplishments during his seven seasons as our head coach and he remains a significant figure in the history of our franchise. Upon further reflection, we havedecided to reinstate him into the Buccaneers Ring of Honor.
I doubt that they will have a re-induction ceremony or anything like that. But, Jon Gruden will once again have his place amongst franchise greats.
