Over the past year, Caitlin Clark of the University of Iowa and Angel Reese of LSU have been in the news more than just about any female college basketball stars of the past.

The level of skill and competition the two players have exhibited has shown a light on women’s college basketball that has arguably never been seen before.

Ever since the 2023 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, Caitlin Clark has been treated like a superstar as she continues to rain buckets down on her opponents and remains a quality citizen in her college town, hometown and beyond.

Angel Reese, on the other hand, has capitalized on the Name, Image and Likeness freedom that is now afforded college athletes and has been a lightning rod for controversy – both after what she did in the title game as well as her unexplained leave of absence from the Tigers team to start this latest season.

As such, on Tuesday, The Sporting News determined that Clark and Reese would share the honor of the publication’s Athlete of the Year award.

“I’m so thankful that we have female athletes who, No. 1, are as competitive and talented and versatile as they are. I’m thankful that we have a game that is garnering the attention that it deserves. And the players are allowed to authentically be themselves. No longer are we in that day and age when it’s not ‘ladylike’ to compete like this, that it’s not respected to compete like that,” Steph White, head coach of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun, told The Sporting News.

A great thing to see, and a great honor for both women to be sure.

But…

What is going on with this graphic announcing it?

“True Crime variant cover?” read one comment.

“Are they also missing? Do we need to call Nancy Grace?” read another comment.

“This graphic gonna haunt me in my sleep cuz why it look like we finna watch a true crime series about these two with the layout and color scheme lol?” someone else joked.
