Caitlin Clark will have a new head coach for her second year in the WNBA and all signs point toward Stephanie White. She is expected to take over the Indiana Fever after the ouster of Christie Sides.
Their college basketball careers bizarrely foreshadowed this transition of power.
White most recently served as the head coach of the Connecticut Sun. Both parties mutually “parted ways” earlier this week after she already talked with Indiana and Chicago about their job openings. Although the Sky also want her to coach Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, the Fever has Clark and Aliyah Boston — reigning back-to-back Rookies of the Year. It is a much better opportunity.
Indiana also has deep-rooted ties to White in more ways than one. First and foremost, she already coached the Fever. They reached a WNBA championship game together in 2016.
Kelly Krauskopf also returned to Indiana as the team’s president of basketball and business operations at the end of September. She hired White as head coach the first time in 2015.
A reunion is imminent and Clark already revealed her opinion on the expected hire.
White also grew up in the Hoosier State and has since been enshrined in the Indiana Hall of Fame. The 47-year-old was Indiana Miss Basketball in 1995, as well as the Gatorade National Player of the Year. Even though she did not play for the Hoosiers, she stayed home and played college basketball at Purdue.
It proved to be a great decision.
White led the Boilermakers to a national title during the 1998-99 season. She was named as the Big Ten Player of the Year and the National College Player of the Year behind an average of 20.2 points, 4.5 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game.
Purdue beat Louisiana Tech in the Final Four to advance to the national championship game. The Bulldogs were the reigning national champions.
Sides played for Louisiana Tech. White absolutely cooked her on a reverse layup in the first half.

Fast forward 25 years and a similar situation is playing out in the WNBA. Barring an unexpected last-minute change, Stephanie White is going to take over for Christie Sides just like she took the national championship trophy in 1999.
To make the whole thing even more serendipitous, both Sides and White wore the number 22 in college. Caitlin Clark also wears 22…
