Caitlin Clarks Claims She’s Going To Break Sue Bird’s ASG Assist Record Because Bird Is Talking Trash

Caitlin Clark is probably the most gifted passer in the history of women’s basketball, and one of the best passers in basketball history, period.  If any women’s player can compare to Clark’s insane vision, it’s the recently retired legend Sue Bird.

As Clark sets assist record after assist record as a rookie for the Indiana Fever, she was taking aim at the all-time assist record in the WNBA All-Star game, set by Sue Bird with 11.

Late in the third quarter, ESPN interviewed Clark while she was on the bench with nine assists, two short of the record. When the record was brought up, she had quite the quip.

“Oh ok, it’s Sue’s, I’m breaking it. She’s been talking crap all game. I’m breaking it. If it’s anybody else, they can keep it. Not Sue,” Caitlin Clark said.

That’s classic Sue Bird. The all-time great was renowned for not just her skill but her insane competitiveness and prolific trash-talking.

I think Caitlin Clark is being pretty lighthearted here. Still, it’s important to note that during the Final Four when Clark was closing out her illustrious career at Iowa, Sue Bird sat next to former teammate Diana Taurasi on an ESPN alternate broadcast when Taurasi claimed that Clark was in for a rude awakening in the WNBA.

Clark has had her ups and downs, but she’s quickly established herself as one of the league’s best players, leading the league in assists through streaky shooting. That continued in the WNBA All-Star Game, where Team USA took on the rest of the league’s stars. Clark finished just 2/9 from the field for four points. Her 10 assists did set a rookie record, but she came up short of Sue Bird’s record of 11.

As the clock wound down, Clark told the ESPN’s Ryan Roucco that Sue Bird can keep her record. But, I’m not sure it will last much longer, as Clark is going to be dishing out dimes in the WNBA All-Star Game for a long time.

Team WNBA beat Team USA, 117-109.
