A member of the Wilson High School surfing team is suing the Long Beach Unified School District in California for allegedly failing to protect him. The surfer claims his teammates beat him and threatened to kill him, and they did little to stop it from happening.
William Frey claims that two of his surfing teammates viciously assaulted him, leaving him with two cuts, bruises all over his back, and swelling on his head. He also claims they caused more than $5,000 worth of property damage to his family’s home.
According to the lawsuit obtained by the California Post, the attack occurred because one of Frey’s surfing teammates was upset that he was hanging out with his younger sister. While at home with his teammate’s sister, he claims his surfing teammate called and threatened “to beat the s— out of him.” Minutes later, the lawsuit claims, Frey’s teammate arrived at his home, demanding he open the door and threatening to kill him.
After Frey’s teammate left the property, he allegedly returned 30 minutes later with two other members of the surfing team, who illegally entered the home through a broken back door. According to the lawsuit, the surfing teammates found Frey in the garage. They allegedly punched Frey in the head and kicked him, striking him 15 to 20 times each. The third teammate recorded the beating. Someone posted a video of the assault on the surf team’s Snapchat channel, and it circulated among the school community.
When Frey fled down the street, the three teammates allegedly chased him in a white Volkswagen. After the attack, one of the teammates allegedly continued to threaten Frey via text.
A temporary restraining order allegedly did little to stop the threats
The Los Angeles Superior Court issued a temporary restraining order against the three alleged attackers, prohibiting any contact with Frey, but classmates continued to harass him. The temporary restraining orders were eventually dismissed, and all three of the alleged attackers were allowed to continue attending classes and participating in the surfing team and senior activities.
All three of William Frey’s teammates are named as defendants in the lawsuit, as are the parents of the three surfers, Wilson High principal Rebecca Caverly, assistant principal Keith Roberson, and the Long Beach Unified School District.
