Cam Ward is expected to be the No. 1 overall selection in the upcoming NFL Draft. He may or may not be able to wear his desired number at the professional level.
In all likelihood, the quarterback will be picked by the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night. A former legend is reportedly holding the jersey number hostage!
Cam Ward has worn No. 1 throughout his D1 career, both at Washington State and Miami. He hopes to do so with his NFL team, too.

“It just depends on what team I go to,” he said in a recent interview. “Hoping to stay No. 1 but if not, I’ll just switch my number.”
Switching numbers is nothing new to Ward. He’d worn No. 7 as a high schooler and at Incarnate Word, a number that wasn’t available when he transferred to the Cougars. Still, No. 1 is the top choice.
Warren Moon is holding Cam Ward’s jersey number hostage.
The number is currently off-limits as a way for the Tennessee Titans to honor Warren Moon. The legendary QB played his first 10 NFL seasons with the franchise.
Moon is a Hall of Famer that led the Titans (Oilers) to seven straight playoff appearances. His jersey was retired in 2006.
He was recently asked about the future of that No. 1 as it relates to Cam Ward. He’s considering allowing the passer to wear it as a rookie.
“I’m thinking about it,” he told Tennessee reporter Paul Kuharsky. No decision has been made to this point, though.
Moon will have plenty of time to come to a decision should the Titans choose Cam Ward with the first overall pick. The rookie will have four months between draft day and his season opener.
Kuharsky noted that the Giants un-retired No. 1 for Malik Nabors last year with the blessing of Ray Flaherty’s family. Maybe Warren Moon will do the same.
