Canelo Alvarez, boxing’s top star, will defend his undisputed super middleweight championship against Jermall Charlo in September, likely Sept. 16 on Mexican Independence Day weekend, sources told ESPN on Thursday.
The Mexican fighter’s bout against Charlo, the WBC middleweight titleholder, is expected to be a Showtime PPV.
The network declined comment. Alvarez announced on Instagram a “done deal” for September along with the PBC logo, but he didn’t name an opponent or specify that the deal was for multiple fights.
PBC’s current stable includes David Benavidez, who has been calling for a fight against Canelo for years.
Impossible to not respect Canelo. Even with little left to prove, he’s still out there chasing the biggest fights. And there’s no denying this PBC deal delivers the best Canelo fights next: Benavidez, Charlo (next, it seems), Morrell, Spence? Etc etc. And hopefully this now means…

PBC now has the top-three box office attractions in the U.S. in Canelo, Tank Davis and Errol Spence. Add in David Benavidez, the Charlos, Deontay Wilder, Caleb Plant, Stephen Fulton, etc., and it’s a stacked stable https://t.co/B8aXS6quON

It’ll be interesting to see if Benavidez gets a shot at Canelo in the next year.
