The Carolina Panthers’ coaching staff is beginning to take shape for the 2023 NFL season.

After a rough few years with Matt Rhule at the helm in his first head coaching gig in the league, the Panthers have seemingly decided to lean on experience with their new coaching staff.

They already made the decision to hire Frank Reich and his 5 years of experience as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts to take on the same job for them.

Now they’ve decided to add even more experience to the staff.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Panthers are brining in another former Colts head coach to join their coaching staff. They are hiring Jim Caldwell as a senior assistant.

Reich and Caldwell have worked together before. When Caldwell was the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Reich spent 2 years as the team’s QB coach and a year as their wide receivers coach.

Pairing Caldwell with Reich gives the Panthers plenty of winning coaching experience to draw from for the 2023 season as they try to get themselves back on a winning track.

The Panthers haven’t put together a season with a winning record since 2017, but did show signs of improvement down the stretch last year, splitting their last 12 games.

The last time Reich and Caldwell worked together, the Indianapolis Colts put together a 14-2 season where they made it to the Super Bowl and a 10-6 season where they won the AFC South. They final season together was rough, with a 2-14 record, but it was also the year Peyton Manning missed because of neck surgery.

It’s a strong addition for the Carolina Panthers as Caldwell had been getting consideration to be a head coach again this offseason and they will be hoping Reich and Caldwell can recreate the success they had in Indianapolis.
