Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer spoke at a press conference earlier today where discussed the current state of the Panthers’ quarterback situation. In that press conference, he gave fans plenty of insight into where the team stands right now.

To begin with, he told reporters that Sam Darnold is the current leader for the starting job, a revelation that must terrify Panthers fans. He also said that the team is doing their due diligence on the QBs available in the draft.

Beyond that, he also gave an update on a free agent who could potentially return to the team. Fitterer told reporters that the Panthers are leaving the door open for a potential Cam Newton return.

It’s difficult to see how a Cam Newton return could actually make sense for either the team or the player. For Newton, it’s a move that would see him start out behind Darnold and then likely finish the season on the bench behind a rookie.

For the Panthers, Newton doesn’t really have much to offer on the field these days. Last season, he was 0-5 in his starts for the team and threw more interception than touchdowns. He also wasn’t particularly impressive throwing the ball with the Patriots in the previous year.

The best reason I can arrive at for the move is to give fans something they might be happy to see as they support a franchise that hasn’t given them much to enjoy in recent years.

It might not be a move that makes much of a difference in this NFL season, but there’s still a possibility we’ll see Cam Newton spend one more season with the Carolina Panthers.
