The Carolina Panthers are in a tough spot at the quarterback position heading into this offseason. Their trade for Sam Darnold played out so poorly that they ended up bringing back Cam Newton. That didn’t work out any better.

Now they’re stuck with just Darnold and PJ Walker on their depth chart. With their head coach on the hot seat, the Panthers will be desperate to fix their QB issues immediately.

There are some veteran options they should take a look at this offseason and they have the 6th pick in the draft, so they could take that route to address the issue. However, it appears that they were at least considering one unexpected QB option already this offseason.

According to a report from Judd Zulgad of SKOR North, the Panthers called to inquire about Kirk Cousins.

“They have gotten a call. Now, from what I’ve heard, it went nowhere so far. But it’s interesting that the phone did ring at TCO [Stadium] in Eagen and on the other end of the line . . . the Carolina Panthers.”

Even though the call didn’t end up developing into anything, it is an interesting development for the Panthers. We don’t know for sure what the future holds for Cousins, but with one year left on a massive contract, it seems unlikely that the Vikings are going to find a robust market for Cousins if they try to trade him.

The idea that the Panthers would jump right to trying to trade for Cousins makes you wonder what kind of confidence they have in any of the other available options.

There will be plenty of cheaper options available through free agency and every QB in the draft could still be there at pick 6. It looks like those are all backup plans to paying a ton for a one year rental who has struggled to win with a ton of weapons around him.

It doesn’t sound like this is a move that will actually happen right now, but Cousins’ expected resistance to a pay cut could change things. If the Carolina Panthers actually do make a trade for Kirk Cousins then we can expect the NFL’s quarterback carousel to get very interesting this offseason.
