It did not take long for the most intense high school football rivalry in Arizona to get chippy. Chandler showed the utmost disrespect toward Hamilton during its pregame runout.
The Wolves ran right through the Huskies’ on-field ceremony!
Arizona high school football officials had to keep the two sides at bay to prevent the situation from escalating to fisticuffs. The home team was completely blindsided by the unexpected impertinence.
Chandler traveled to Hamilton for the final game of the regular season.
Chandler High School and Hamilton High School are separated by less than five miles. Both campuses are located on Arizona Avenue in Chandler, Arizona. Chandler is located on the north side. Hamilton is located on the south side.
Both schools enroll more than 3,000 students. They both compete in 6A division of the Arizona Interscholastic Association within the Fiesta Region. Their high school football teams are two of the best in the state and in the country.
Chandler is ranked No. 2 in Arizona and No. 28 nationally. Hamilton is ranked No. 3 in Arizona and No. 89 nationally.
The former traveled to the latter on Thursday night. The Wolves and the Huskies shared an equivalent overall record of 8-1. Tensions were already heightened because of the rivalry game. It was also a high-stakes matchup with major playoff seeding implications to close out the regular season.
Hamilton jumped out to an early 14-0 lead but Chandler rallied back to tie the score at 14 with less than one minute remaining in the first quarter. They traded blows over the next 36 minutes.
Oregon commit Will Mencl called his own number on 4th-and-1 with just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter. The five-star quarterback prospect broke loose for a 62-yard touchdown to tie the game at 24.

Not too long thereafter, he led a 73-yard scoring drive to give the Wolves their first lead of the game. It also proved to be the final touchdown of the game. The Huskies could not answer. This was the final play of the game:

The clock ticked down to zero. Chandler defeated Hamilton by a score of 31-24.
The Arizona high school football rivalry got chippy during pregame.
Hamilton head coach Travis Dixon started at quarterback on the Huskies’ back-to-back state championship teams in 2003 and 2004. He is very familiar with his alma mater’s rivalry with the Wolves. These two teams do not like each other. Athletes who often played on the same youth programs as kids are split down the middle by the boundary line when they get to high school.
And, to add to the tension, both high school football teams are very good. This isn’t a one-sided rivalry!
Chandler threw gasoline on the fire during pregame on Thursday. It showed the utmost disrespect to Hamilton during its team runout. The Huskies were celebrating senior night. They set up a row of cheerleaders, parents and former players outside of the inflatable tunnel on what is known to some as the ‘Hamilton Lane.’
The Wolves jumped in front of the home team and ran right through its band/cheer line.

Chandler just ran onto the field right past Hamilton’s players and through the tunnel lined by the Huskies band and cheerleaders 😳

The Huskies were visibly shook by the visitor’s unexpected runout.

Players from both teams exchanged pleasantries and some of them flipped the double birds. Officials had to step in between them.
DRAMA AT HAMILTON 😳😳

Chandler ran out through Hamilton's band/cheer line, with players from both teams shouting at one another. Two of the top teams in the state here for the Battle of Arizona Avenue, and it is clear they do NOT like each other.@12News pic.twitter.com/CGFTeJFzGv
Needless to say, the Arizona high school football game was feisty from the jump. Chandler backed up its behavior with the win.
