Chargers fans have been excited for the Jim Harbaugh era since the head coach took over the role after winning a national title with the Michigan Wolverines. Unfortunately, that tenure didn’t get off to the start many had hoped.

Eager fans gathered ’round to watch Los Angeles make its first NFL Draft pick under Harbaugh’s leadership, and they couldn’t have been more disappointed.

Looking at the roster, wide receiver was an immediate need. Luckily for the Bolts, pass catching talent was aplenty in the first round of the selection process.

Marvin Harrison and Malik Nabers were the top two wideouts on the board, and with the first three teams taking quarterbacks, one of those two standouts seemed destined to fall into Harbaugh’s hands.

Harrison went at No. 4 to the Cardinals, leaving Nabers for the taking, which was good news considering many believed the LSU star to be the better choice.

But then, Jim Harbaugh did what Jim Harbaugh does.

He made a pick to bolster the front line with offensive tackle Joe Alt rather than give Justin Herbert a weapon on the outside. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with getting stronger in the trenches, wide receiver was a position of desperate need.

A quick look at the Chargers‘ depth chart shows WR1 to be Joshua Palmer, who totaled 581 yards last season. Behind him is Quentin Johnston, who racked up 439 yards in his rookie year.

Not much is proven with Keenan Allen now off to Chicago.

Considering the lack of both experience and production, most had hoped to see Malik Nabers come off the board. Jim Harbaugh went rogue!

Chargers fans were not happy with the pick.

It’s no secret Harbaugh wants to run the football. He’s done it at every stop, college or pro, and the offensive line is where success starts. Still, with a talent like Herbert in the backfield, and the option of another potential weapon at his disposal, Joe Alt wasn’t the choice most had hoped for.

Fan reactions are now going viral on social media.

Alt will fit into Jim Harbaugh’s scheme, even if he doesn’t fill the role of “splash pick” in the 2024 NFL Draft. The offensive attack will focus on the run game, and the lineman should play a significant role!
