Charleston Riverdogs outfielder Jose Perez had a fly ball ricochet off his face.
A minor league baseball player in South Carolina had a fly ball ricochet off of his face during his most recent contest. The outfielder was left with a nasty shiner as a result.
He showed that injury off to followers on social media after the game. It’s going to leave a mark!
The matchup involved the Charleston Riverdogs and Augusta Greenjackets. The visiting team won easily. The painful mishap only provided insult to injury.
Charleston Riverdogs outfielder drops fly ball.
Charleston is the single A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. Jose Perez was designated to join the team earlier this week, though he’s had previous stints with the Riverdogs over parts of the last two years.
His most recent appearance with the organization began in terrible fashion.
He made his first start of the season on Wednesday. He went 0-2 at the dish with a walk and a strikeout. His day would get worse before it got better.
In the top of the ninth inning, an Augusta batter hit a shallow fly ball into right field. Perez appeared to have a beat. He positioned himself beneath the ball to make a play. He failed.
The ball missed the outfielder’s glove. Instead, it ricocheted off of his face. He immediately fell to the grass in pain.
If tonight wasn’t going bad enough for the Riverdogs.
They have given up 18 unanswered runs to Augusta.

A teammate eventually corralled the baseball, but by that time, the damage had already been done – both figuratively and literally.
Greenjackets scored 18 straight runs.
The score was tied 1-1 entering the top of the fifth. The Riverdogs imploded soon thereafter.
Augusta scored two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth, and nine in the seventh. They’d add four more in the ninth frame, aided by Perez’s error.
In all, the Greenjackets plated 18 consecutive runs. Charleston would end that streak with a run in its final at-bat, but the hole was far too deep to overcome.
The Riverdogs lost, 19-2. Perez was left with a painful memory of the miserable outing. He shared a photo of his shiner on Instagram late Wednesday night.
