Bethune-Cookman’s mascot was not happy with the officiating during Monday’s overtime college basketball game. Wil D. Cat caused a hilarious disruption at the end of the second half in protest of a crucial call for which he disagreed.

He went rogue!!!

The questionable sequence of events began with 1:59 remaining in regulation.

Bethune-Cookman took a 68-63 lead with a made jump shot. And then the fouls began.

This is where we pick things up.

The Hornets had the ball, down three on the road, with five seconds left. They pushed up the court and fired a three-pointer for the tie right before the buzzer and missed.

But the Wildcats were called for a foul. Alabama State went to the charity stripe and knocked down three free throws. The game was tied at 72 with one second left.

Wil D. Cat was not happy with the call.

To express his frustration, the costumed mascot walked over to the cheerleaders behind the baseline. He reached over and demanded one of their pom-poms. It was a protest.

Wil D. Cat snatched the pom-pom, turned right around, and lobbed onto the court before the final play of the game. A nearby staffer had to hustle onto the floor to clear the loose object prior to the inbounds pass. The mascot’s angry protest caused a brief disruption!

As someone who has watched plenty of mid-major college basketball in his day, I cannot recall a similar incident. I don’t think I have ever seen a mascot steal a pom-pom and throw it onto the court.

Wil D. Cat was wildin’ but Bethune-Cookman won anyway!
