Houston came just one inch short of overtime during the college football game against Texas Tech on Friday. Quarterback Conner Weigman was tackled right before the ball crossed the goal line.

Did the officials make the correct ruling?

Weigman and the Cougars hope to see the Red Raiders at the end of the college football season with the Big 12 title on the line. There is still a long way to go.

Did Texas Tech stop Houston at the goal line?

No. 13 Texas Tech packed Galaxy Stadium for Friday’s ranked matchup against No. 22 Houston. It was rocking.

However, the Cougars were not fazed by the environment. They jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and went into the locker room at halftime up by three. The Red Raiders battled back during the third quarter. It was a one-point game at the start of the fourth.

And then things got interesting. Texas Tech took an eight-point lead with six minutes remaining. Both teams exchanged punts. Houston got the ball back, down 28-20, with two minutes and 35 seconds left in the game.

Conner Weigman led a 10-play, 88-yard drive to find the end zone with 49 seconds still on the clock. The Cougars had no choice but to go for two. They were stopped short. Barely.

Weigman was forced out of the pocket and scrambled toward the goal line. A bang-bang collision saw him throw out his arms toward the end zone. It looked for a moment like he might’ve gotten in but the officials ruled him short and the crowd went wild.

Upon further review, the call was upheld. Weigman came within an inch — no hyperbole — of tying the game.

Conner Weigman wants another shot.

There is still a long way to go between now and the Big 12 Championship in December. Houston wants to be there. As things currently stand, it will not play only one ranked opponent, Utah, between now and then. It expects to be at or near the top of the standings as the postseason nears closer.

Conner Weigman spoke about the opportunity in front of him after the loss to Texas Tech. He and his teammates were already talking about the rematch in the locker room. They are even more motivated to win the next nine games because of the result.

The Cougars likely need to win out. They have Georgia Southern, UCF, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Utah, Cincinnati, Colorado, West Virginia and Baylor remaining. Can they do it? Let us know in the comment section!
