Danny Freund's wife mocked Washington State on social media.
The Washington State football team is off to a rough start in 2026. The Cougars are 1-4 and just opened conference play with a 20-point home loss to Fresno State.
As a result of the poor performance, head coach Kirby Moore opted to make a change. He’s assumed play calling duties from offensive coordinator Matt Miller.
Moore, in his first season leading the program, has previously called plays at Fresno State and Missouri. He’s seen enough from the Cougars‘ pedestrian unit to shake things up.
Washington State football has struggled.
The team has losses to Washington, Kansas State, Arizona, and Fresno State. Each contest has been decided by double digits. The Cougars failed to score more than 10 points in three of those four matchups.
The offense ranks 122nd in college football, scoring 19 points per game under first-year offensive coordinator Matt Miller.
Miller was hired in the offseason after six seasons at Boise State. In his last, he was dubbed co-OC. He’s also been an offensive coordinator at the FCS level with Montana State.
For one reason or another, it hasn’t worked in Pullman. The Cougars are 133rd nationally in total yardage. They rank 118th in turnovers lost. They’re 132nd in sacks allowed. It’s been a disaster all around.
This week, Moore revealed that he’d be taking over play calling for the team’s next game vs. Utah State. Miller will remain on staff.
“As the leader of this program, it hasn’t been good enough,” he said after a 26-6 loss to Fresno State. “I look forward to working with the offensive staff and calling the plays moving forward.”
Ann Freund, the wife of former Washington State football coach Danny Freund, had some thoughts on that announcement.

Ann Freund mocked Washington State and its failed offensive coordinator.
Danny Freund was the Washington State offensive coordinator in 2025 under head coach Jimmy Rogers. The Cougars won seven games and racked up more than 600 yards of offense in a bowl win over Utah State, the team next on the 2026 schedule.
I do not know if the relationship with the school is strained. Freund spent just one season with the program. He followed Rogers from South Dakota State. Rogers then left after one year to coach Iowa State. Freund was not retained.
He is now at North Dakota. I don’t know if he tried to stay in Pullman and was passed over. I don’t know if there is bad blood linked to his exit.
For one reason or another, his wife opted to troll the Cougars online.
“My family and I are thrilled to be back in Grand Forks,” Freund said of the return to his alma mater, a program he’d previously spent 13 years on staff.
North Dakota is 5-1 this year and averaging just under 50 points a game against FCS opponents with Freund calling the plays.
