Following the Sunday night shooting of former Boston Red Sox legend David “Big Papi” Ortiz, his wife Tiffany has released an updated, reassuring statement on the former slugger’s current condition.
After Ortiz underwent successful surgery in a Dominican Republic hospital, he was then transported back to Boston via a charter plane sent by the Red Sox ownership.
The statement from Tiffany Ortiz, released before Noon on Tuesday, June 11, indicates that Big Papi is currently recovering and “resting comfortably” at Massachusettes General Hospital.

“David arrived at Massachusettes General Hospital last night and underwent a successful second surgery. He is stable, awake, and resting comfortably this morning in the ICU where he is expected to remain for the next several days,” the statement begins.
“On behalf of me and my family, I want to thank John and Linda Henry, Tom Werner, Sam Kennedy and the Boston Red Sox for all that they are doing for David and our family, as well as Dr. Larry Ronan and the amazing staff at Massachusettes General Hospital,” Tiffany continues.
“Lastly, I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of support and love that we have received during this incredibly difficult time. We ask for privacy as David works towards recovery,” she concludes.
In the aftermath of the shooting, reports have indicated that Dominican Republic authorities believe the shooting was an attempt on Ortiz’s life due to an alleged affair with a drug lord’s wife.

Additionally, Ortiz’s representative Leo Lopez agreed that the shooting was “the act of ‘hired’ killers.”
“There is no doubt that it was an act of hired killers. If we had known that there was a dangerous situation, he would not have been there at that moment,” Leo Lopez said to Diario Libre.
"I don't have enough words to describe who @davidortiz is, what David means to baseball…"
