Deion Sanders has his Colorado Buffaloes off to a 4-1 start in the 2024 college football season, and another big opportunity awaits with an upcoming matchup against Kansas State looming.
A statement win over the 18th-ranked Wildcats would bode well for his team’s Big 12 championship aspirations.
At the time of this writing, Colorado is one of five teams undefeated in league play at 2-0 after knocking off UCF and Baylor. The path gets a bit more difficult this Saturday.
It’s been a surprising start to many who doubted Coach Prime in Year 2. After going just 4-8 in his debut season, he’s already been able to match the win total of his previous campaign.
With that being said, his future in Boulder is always a topic of conversation.
The Buffs have been led by superstars Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, both of whom are likely off to the NFL next year. Others, including son, Shilo, are also expected to be leaving the program.
Should the wins continue to pile up, Deion Sanders’ name will be a hot one in coaching searches.
He’s adamantly denied interest in other roles, stating that he plans to stay with Colorado for as long as the school will have him. Then again, with his sons moving on, a decision to depart would be made a bit easier.
Would Deion Sanders accept another job if offered?
Colorado’s athletic director Rick George is hoping he doesn’t!
He gave his coach a stamp of approval during the bye week, saying that he hopes Sanders ends his career in Boulder.
“We hope Coach Prime finishes his career here.” George said. “I think he can do significant things for us long-term with longevity. I think Coach would sit here and tell you that he and I are on the same page about where we want this program to go.
“It’s not a short-term fix and we want to set it up to be sustainable for the future. I think what he’s done is incredible. I like the culture he’s created. I see it on a daily basis… I like where we’re at.”
That culture mentioned has been a talking point, as has Sanders’ ability to consistently recruit and develop high school talent.
Reports of a Grand Theft Auto type locker room surfaced earlier this offseason, though Deion Sanders denied the accusations.
He’s also been criticized for placing an emphasis on quick fixes in the transfer portal as opposed to bringing in long-term contributors.
Through the negativity, Sanders has continued to keep the focus on doing things his way.
That’s paid dividends this season with the Buffs off to that 4-1 start. They’ll hope to continue what’s now a three-game winning streak in their upcoming Big 12 matchup.
