Deion Sanders’ Instagram Activity Fuels Julian Lewis Transfer Rumors At Colorado

Deion Sanders liked an Instagram post calling Julian Lewis "trash."


The Colorado football team dropped a second straight Big 12 matchup on Saturday, losing 23-13 to Baylor in Waco. Quarterback Julian Lewis was benched in the second half for Isaac Wilson.

Head coach Deion Sanders put it bluntly when asked about the passer’s play and leadership. “He’s not there yet,” the coach said in a recent presser.

The comments and subsequent benching have created concerns surrounding Lewis’s future as QB1. Sanders’s social media activity is now fueling transfer rumors.

The passer finished with a stat line of 11-for-16 passing with 75 yards and no touchdowns. The coaching staff believed he was playing scared.

Lewis was sacked three times in the first half. He averaged less than five yards per attempt while failing to lead a touchdown drive.

The signal caller was replaced at halftime with the Buffs trailing 10-3. Isaac Wilson started the second half, throwing for 156 yards and a score.

Lewis’s poor performance was his second in as many weeks. In a blowout loss to Northwestern, he threw two interceptions. The offense turned the ball over seven times.

After the game, Sanders said the following about his play and leadership.

“I expect leadership from (certain players). I don’t expect that from certain positions,” he said. “That’s not the makeup of who they are.”

Lewis signed with Colorado as one of the nation’s top recruits. He’s failed to live up to the bill, though there is still time to rewrite the narrative. Will he do so in Boulder?

Transfer rumors swirl on social media.

The benching at Baylor placed doubts as to whether Julian Lewis would continue leading the Colorado offense in the second half of the season.

His head coach’s Instagram activity is now fueling transfer speculation.

Deion Sanders liked a post calling Lewis “trash” online. That post was accompanied by Coach Prime’s previously mentioned press conference comments.

The Instagram post also gathered a series of criticisms, some of which called for a transfer.

“Bruh, I’d hate playing for Deion,” one message read. “He, himself, is not a leader.”

The reasoning for the “like” are unknown. Maybe it was an accident. Maybe it was a message. Or, maybe Sanders was attempting to highlight the doubters while stashing receipts for a later date. I, admittedly, don’t know the motive.

It was reported earlier in the year that Lewis mulled a transfer to Georgia Tech last offseason. The move would’ve allowed the Georgia native to return home to Atlanta.

Ultimately, it didn’t happen. He would actually wind up beating the Yellow Jackets in the season opener, leading a game-winning touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately, performance has been lacking in the games to follow. His leadership and mindset have been challenged as a result.

Julian Lewis was benched in his most recent Colorado football outing. Should he be demoted in a full-time capacity, transfer whispers will grow louder.
