The Denver Broncos have made a move to bolster their quarterback depth by signing quarterback Ben DiNucci, his agency JL Sports announced.
The 26-year-old signal-caller will join the Broncos’ roster and compete for the third quarterback position behind Russell Wilson and Jarrett Stidham.
Ben DiNucci recently wrapped up a successful stint in the XFL Football league, where he showcased his skills and emerged as one of the league’s top performers. Leading the XFL in pass attempts (421), yards (2,966), and passing touchdowns (23), DiNucci proved his ability to lead an offense efficiently.
A former seventh-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2020 NFL Draft, DiNucci’s opportunities in the league have been limited. In his rookie season, he appeared in three games for the Cowboys, with his most notable start coming in Week 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Although the Cowboys suffered a 23-9 loss, DiNucci threw for 180 yards, displaying glimpses of his potential.
Although Ben DiNucci’s signing is not expected to significantly impact the Broncos’ quarterback situation, he could serve as an insurance policy for the team. With Wilson and Stidham already in line to backup each other, DiNucci’s role may be limited to a spot on the practice squad. However, if he impresses during the offseason, he may be able to secure a better position on the team.
Standing at 6’3″ and weighing 209 pounds, Ben DiNucci possesses the physical attributes necessary to play the quarterback position at the professional level. His college career saw him initially struggle during his time with the University of Pittsburgh from 2015 to 2017, posting modest numbers in completion rate, yards per attempt, touchdowns, and interceptions. However, he experienced a significant turnaround at James Madison University from 2018 to 2019. During this period, DiNucci threw for an impressive 45 touchdowns while only throwing 18 interceptions. He also contributed as a rusher, tallying 229 yards, 1,002 rushing yards, and 16 rushing touchdowns.
While expectations for a seventh-round draft pick are typically not high, the Dallas Cowboys saw enough potential in DiNucci to select him in the 2020 NFL Draft, preventing other teams from bidding for his services as an undrafted free agent.
Overall, Ben DiNucci’s signing adds some depth to the Broncos’ quarterback position, but it remains to be seen how he will fit in with the team and what role he will ultimately play.
