DiJonai Carrington and NaLyssa Smith played 18 games together during the 2025 WNBA season. They have since been separated from one another by a mid-season trade.

That did not stop the former from cheering for the latter during their most recent game!

Carrington completely forgot about her true WNBA allegiance and accidentally clapped for her opponent. Her opponent just so happened to be her girlfriend.

A timeline of their relationship dates back at least five years.

Before we get to this hilarious viral moment, lets first rewind to the beginning. DiJonai Carrington and NaLyssa Smith started dating in 2020 when they were playing college basketball together at Baylor.

They decided to stay together after college even though they were both drafted by different teams. Carrington played for the Sun. Smith played for the Fever.

Their love was very real during their first few seasons in the league. However, the WNBA couple supposedly broke up in 2023 and things got a bit messy between them.

True love prevailed.

Carrington and Smith ultimately got back together after a few flirtatious on-court moments. They never truly moved on. The flame between them never went out.

Their rekindled relationship led to a few awkward scenarios in 2024. Carrington got herself into some trouble with an accidental eye poke on Caitlin Clark, who was a teammate of Smith. She later started drama by criticizing the Indiana Fever for keeping her girlfriend on the bench.

Neither DiJonai Carrington nor NaLyssa Smith stayed with their respective teams during the offseason. Carrington signed with the Dallas Wings. Smith was traded to the Dallas Wings.

Although they both got in trouble with Paige Bueckers for flirting at the pool on the night before a game, it couldn’t have worked out any better… until Smith was traded again in June. She was “sick to her stomach.”

DiJonai Carrington forgot not to root for NaLyssa Smith.

The Wings hosted the Las Vegas Aces in Dallas prior to the All-Star break. Carrington was not playing because of an injury. Smith scored seven points with eight rebounds over 23 minutes in a four-point win.

At one point, DiJonai Carrington completely forgot that her girlfriend had been traded. She cheered for a made basket by her opponent because her opponent was NaLyssa Smith.

This kind of thing can only happen in the WNBA. Two girlfriends played against each other on different sides of a regular season matchup. One of them got mixed up and accidentally cheered for her opponent!
