Dijonai Carrington is one of the most polarizing players in the WNBA. The Dallas Wings guard plays fast and physical, which helped her lock up All-League defensive honors last year.

It’s also led to controversy, however. Her reckless play has been a major topic of conversation early on in the 2025 season.

Carrington is fresh off an impressive ’24 campaign in which she was named the league’s Most Improved Player. She also made First-Team All-Defense and averaged career-highs in points (12.7 ppg), steals (1.6 spg), blocks (0.4 bpg), and rebounds (5.0 rpg).

Despite the success, she was traded from Connecticut to Dallas in the offseason. She’s now on pace to tally new bests in a number of statistical categories.

With the good, comes the bad in Carrington’s case, though. Her growth as a WNBA star continues, but her on-court antics often grab negative attention.

Just last weekend, she had a referee call security on her following a loss to Chicago. That backup was requested amid a postgame spat. Carrington posted her response to the situation on social media shortly thereafter.

Many sided with her in that particular instance. The official’s response might’ve been an overreaction. She’s lost that support in the days to follow.

WNBA fans are calling out Dijonai Carrington’s dangerous play.

Carrington leads the WNBA with three flagrant fouls through eight games. One of those came in late May during a loss to Minnesota. She was seen skying for a block on a fast break attempt resulting in unnecessary contact.

A similar play unfolded two days ago in a loss against Seattle. Again, an opposing player had the ball under the basket, and again, Carrington went up for a block only to come down hard on her target.

Dijonai Carrington plays fast, but often out of control. Her inability to compete with any type of caution puts opposing players in potentially harmful positions. She’s shown little remorse to this point.

The guard responded to criticism this week. She wants the narrative of her being a dirty player to end.

Yall fAnS swear i’m such a dirty player. I’m SO over this narrative bc if u really know bball, u know I jus play hard asf & never give up on a play. &yup, we challenged the last couple flagrants & got em rescinded bc I’m ALWAYS tryna make a play on the ball nun more, nun less.

Her early season string of controversial fouls won’t do much to change the public opinion.
