According to a recent report from ESPN writer Tim Bontemps, Doc Rivers will be returning to coach the 76ers next year.

Philadelphia was eliminated from postseason play on Thursday as they fell 4-2 in their series with the top seeded Heat. The loss leaves a talented roster on the sidelines, once again, as they’ll watch another Eastern Conference team compete for a championship.

The early exit from the playoffs had many speculating whether or not Rivers would be back in Philadelphia for the 2022-23 slate. His name had been tied to the open Lakers vacancy, and some believed that his time with the Sixers would come to an end without at least a Conference Finals appearance.

That is apparently not the case, as team president Daryl Morey confirmed that Rivers will return.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on Rivers’ legacy as a coach.

He’s taken a number of teams to regular season success but has often seen it crash and burn in the playoffs. While he does have one NBA title with the Celtics, Rivers-led clubs have choked away large series leads time after time, leading to criticism.

With a roster as talented as Philadelphia’s, fans wondered if a second-round exit would be enough for the Sixers to cut ties. It wasn’t, and now the NBA world is reacting to the news.

Many 76er fans are sad to see Rivers back, it appears. The response on social media was rather negative.

Lakers fans, on the other hand, seem to think they dodged a bullet. Rivers was heavily linked to the opening in Los Angeles.

We’ll see if Rivers can get over the hump in Philly and how this affects the Lakers moving forward.
