Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final home game did not go according to plan on Saturday. Not only did the Blue Devils lose, but they lost to their in-state rival UNC Tar Heels.

After the game, the handshake line was left with some controversy.

While sad Duke fans cried in the stands, assistant coach Cris Carrawell refused to shake hands with UNC head coach Hubert Davis and although assistant Nolan Smith did shake Davis’ hand, he looked the other way while doing so. Davis was absolutely shocked by the snub.

Following his team’s crucial win over a heated rival, Davis did not know what happened.

“I don’t know what that’s about,” he said. “I didn’t play against him, I don’t know him personally.”

While it may seem like the Blue Devils assistants are sore losers, which definitely factors into the equation, there is more to the story. It was apparently bigger than just the final result.

Carrawell spoke with the Charlotte Observer after the game and explained what happened. He claims that the decision not to shake Davis’ hand had to do with pregame.

According to Carrawell, Davis did not shake the hands of Duke’s coaching staff prior to the game. He did not like that.

Here is what happened:

Typically, coaching staffs exchange pregame handshakes when they take the court for the last time after warmups. When the Blue Devils coaching staff entered the arena on Saturday, Davis was not on the sideline just yet.

When he eventually made his way from the locker room to the court, Davis had to walk in front of Duke’s bench but did not shake their hands. There was a lot of commotion going on during the pregame celebration for Coach K, which may have contributed to the lack of handshake.

For what it’s worth, Davis and Krzyzewski did shake hands prior to the game.

Whatever the reason, Carrawell felt disrespected and returned the (lack of) favor during the postgame handshake line. It also may have stemmed from frustration from earlier in the year.

A story from ESPN on Wednesday suggested that Duke staffers were “bristled” by UNC’s decision not to honor Coach K during his final game in Chapel Hill. Most, if not all, other schools gave the coaching legend some kind of tribute during his last game at their arena.

The Tar Heels did not.

Should the two teams end up meeting during March Madness, it would be quite the battle. The bad blood between the blue bloods in North Carolina is very real.
