During a recent interview on the 7pm in Brooklyn podcast hosted by former NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony and The Kid Mero, Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade said he believes injuries prevented him from being the next Michael Jordan.

Dwyane Wade, wearing his shades indoors and holding a cup in his hand — which, to be clear, we have no idea what’s in said cup, but he and Melo are both holding one for basically the entirety of the interview — said he “thought he was coming for” MJ before injuries slowed his career.

Further clarification, because I like to stay ahead of the curve: I’m not presuming to know nor speculating on what’s in that cup, I’m merely stating the facts: he is wearing shades and nursing a cup.

“I’m not the greatest shooter of all time, but I was great at so many different things,” Wade said. “No one knows how to really break down my game… Before injuries, I’m like [Michael Jordan]. I’m coming for you.”

While Wade is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in NBA history, his logic regarding his injury history doesn’t quite hold up when looking through his career statistics.

My best guess is that Wade is referring to the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons. During the season Wade and the Heat won the title, he started in 75 games. His two seasons before that, he started in 77 and 56 (as a rookie).

In 2006-07, however, injuries caused Wade to start in just 50 games, an in 2007-08, that number dipped to 49. While Wade would get back on track from 2009-09 through 2011-12 (staring a career-high 79 games in 08/09), injuries prevented him from ever starting in more than 73 games passed that point.
