Strange NFL Rule Prohibits Philadelphia Eagles From Reacquiring Jets LB Haason Reddick

The Philadelphia Eagles made a move to protect future cap space and try to get a bit younger on defense when they traded away star edge Haason Reddick to the Jets in the offseason for a draft pick. General Manager Howie Roseman has a good track record, and there was no reason to think that this move wouldn’t work, especially since they had signed former Jet Bryce Huff a few weeks prior.

But, Reddick hasn’t even played for the Jets due to a contract holdout, and the Eagles haven’t got much production out of any of their edge-rushers, including Bryce Huff. Many have floated a potential trade that would bring Reddick back to the Eagles, but it turns out that it’s against league rules.

Reddick, who has double-digit sacks the last three years, was traded for just a conditional 3rd-round pick in 2026 as the move was mostly about the fact that Haason Reddick wanted a new contract and the Eagles didn’t want to pay up. The Jets were surely happy to acquire someone with four straight double-digit sack season. But, a contract impasse has him on the sidelines, and there appears to be little progress being made towards a deal.

Meanwhile, the Eagles have only gotten two sacks from their edge-rushers through four games, and none from Bryce Huff. A reunion would make some sense, though Reddick would probably want a contract extension in Philadelphia, too.

But, it’s a moot point. NFL rules prohibit a team from trading for a player that they have traded away within a two-year span.

“The #Jets situation with Haason Reddick still has no resolution & some wondered if NYJ could trade him back to the #Eagles. Turns out, per NFL rules, not possible. Teams can’t trade a player, then reacquire him via trade until 2 years elapse. Reddick won’t head back to Philly,”

Sorry, Eagles fans.
