As the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl came to a close on Monday afternoon, Northern Illinois head coach Thomas Hammock was bathed in french fries. However, the viewers at home were not able to witness one of the greatest moments of the college football postseason because ESPN completely missed it.

Fortunately, the bowl game itself captured the glorious french fry bath in all of its glory.

If you are reading this article, you are probably familiar with this celebratory tradition. For those who are not, let me quickly explain. At some point over the last decade, bowl games decided to set themselves apart from the others with a unique postgame gimmick. In lieu of a Gatorade bath, coaches get the sponsoring company’s product dumped on their heads. For example, the Smoothie Bowl has a smoothie bath, the Mayo Bowl a mayo bath, and so on and so forth.

In Idaho, it’s potatoes. As soon as the game goes final, players from the winning team pour a few pounds of french fries overtop of their head coach. Hammock was the recipient on Friday.

Fresno State missed a field goal as time expired in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime.

Northern Illinois proved victorious during the double overtime period. However, ESPN’s broadcast focused on the players’ celebration— not what everybody tuned in to watch.

How could you miss the french fry bath?! Did the supposed Worldwide Leader in Sports not know that it was coming?! Did it fail to put a camera in place?! Fans were outraged.

Fortunately, the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl was on top of it. About 15 minutes after ESPN’s catastrophic blunder, the french fry bath made its way to social media. The day was saved.

ESPN blew it. Very few moments in college football are more hyped every December than the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl french fry bath. To not show it is a catastrophic failure! And to make matters worse, the broadcast was already subject to criticism because ESPN accidentally referred to the Fresno State Bulldogs as the Bulldongs. Brutal showing.
