Fans Aren’t Sure What To Think About The Bold New Packers’ Alternate Helmets

Apparently, the Green Bay Packers’ front office really liked what they saw when the Cincinnati Bengals revealed their white alternate helmets during the 2022 season.

Because on October 20, for their game against the Houston Texans, the Packers will be donning a similar look with their own white lids.

The team is calling it the “Winter Warning” game and are asking not only the players to wear white, they also want the over 80,000 fans in attendance to wear white as well.

The goal, according to a Green Bay press release, is to “create a blizzard-like effect in the stadium in honor of Packers fans’ legendary energy during even the harshest of winter conditions.”

It certainly has nothing to do with something else that is mentioned in the press release: “To encourage fans to take part and transform Lambeau Field into a whiteout, the Packers Pro Shop has launched a brand-new line of accompanying merchandise.”

The promotion in no way is just a way for the Packers to sell “white shirts, hats, caps and outerwear, along with white drinkware, novelty goods and wall art, as well as replica versions of the helmets the players will wear” to all of their diehard fans – fans who are willing to pay good money to “own” the team (though not really).

Bonus! These same fans will also be given a “Winter Warning” white scarf… from American Family Insurance… “to help add to the snowstorm-like atmosphere.”

“White uniforms and helmets have been worn several times throughout Packers history,” the press release explained. “The team experimented with white as an alternate uniform color for the first time in 1938 and also at various times in the 40s and 50s, before it was eventually introduced as the standard away jersey color in the 1960s.

“White helmets were also featured in the 1950s, making their debut in 1956 during the home opener against Detroit, when the Packers wore dark green jerseys with white trim, green socks, white pants and white helmets with a single green stripe down the center. The same uniforms and white helmets returned during the entire 1958 season – while not a successful season for the Packers, nine players from that team’s starting lineup would go on to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”

Reactions to the Packers’ big white helmet reveal were a mixed bag.

“They’re not bad, it just looks wrong. Packers colors are classic. To not have a hint of yellow anywhere in it just makes it look like some other G team’s helmet,” another fan commented.

“You’re the Green Bay Packers,” someone else complained. “You don’t need to chase these college trends like other teams do. Sell the mini helmet in the Pro Shop, but look like the Packers by dressing like the Packers.”

“Those are sick. But I feel like the helmet should have a yellow stripe down the middle to match the yellow stripe on the pants and shoulders,” another fan wrote, echoing many others.
