At one point during the 2024 Formula 1 season, it appeared that the legendary Ferrari team might threaten Red Bull Racing’s stranglehold on the sport.

Charles Leclerc dominated his home Monaco Grand Prix and the Scuderia sat just behind Red Bull in the constructors championship.

Since then, Ferrari has faltered mightily as rivals Mercedes and McLaren have surged past them. On Monday, Ferrari finally addressed its issues, parting ways with technical director Enrico Cardile, who had been with the team since 2005.

“Scuderia Ferrari HP announces that Enrico Cardile is leaving the company, therefore relinquishing his role as Technical Director Chassis Area,” the team said in a statement on social media. “After almost two decades with Ferrari, Cardile has handed in his notice and therefore, with immediate effect, and as an interim measure, the Chassis Area will be overseen by Team Principal, Frederic Vasseur.

“Everyone at Scuderia Ferrari HP thanks Enrico for all his hard work over so many years.”

Cardile joined Ferrari directly out of college and worked with the FIA GT Championship team before transferring to the Formula 1 program in 2016.

Rumors suggest that Cardile has already agreed to a deal to join the Aston Martin F1 team.

Enrico Cardile Move Could Open Up Spot At Ferrari For Adrian Newey

Ferrari, meanwhile, is left without a full-time technical director to handle the development of its chassis. Although the team has twice lost ground to the rest of the Formula 1 grid this season after introducing chassis “upgrades.”

Cardile leaving could well open up a role for legendary car designer Adrain Newey. Newey announced earlier in the season that he was leaving Red Bull Racing after nearly two decades with the team.

“This is the next bomb on the transfer market of Formula 1. After Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari, star designer Adrian Newey is now the focus,” Michael Schmidt of German outlet AMuS reported at the time. “The 65-year-old Englishman is to announce his departure from Red Bull soon. Newey has been employed by the British racing team since 2006.”
