It Is Impossible To See ANYTHING From Worst Seat At Final Four Because Even The Jumbotron Is Tiny

Final Four Worst Seat

The worst seat at the Final Four in “Phoenix” is even worse than you could imagine. Whomever purchased those tickets were simply trying to get in the building and experience the atmosphere.

They cannot see anything.

State Farm Stadium is not built for basketball! It is a football stadium!

For some reason (money), the NCAA continues to play its biggest college basketball games at football stadiums. It can sell more tickets. It can sell more food, drink and merchandise. Whatever.

The first Final Four held in a football stadium took place in 1971. UCLA beat Villanova in the Houston Astrodome. That continued on and off for a few years until a permanent move was made in 1997.

While there are pros to a bigger stadium (more people can be there), there are a lot of cons. In terms of on-court logistics, there is a major adjustment required of the players with sight lines. Athletes are forced to recalibrate to such a large space before the most important game of their lives.

In terms of fan experience, unless you are seated in the lower bowl, the television broadcast is much better viewing. Even if you are seated in the lower bowl, it can be dicey.

That was true on Saturday. Everybody on the floor looked like ants.

To make matters even worse, State Farm Stadium has a shockingly small jumbotron. Unlike AT&T Stadium in Dallas, the midfield (or court, in this case) videoboard does not provide better vision of what is happening. Watching the screen from the highest section in the building does not help.

It was virtually impossible to see anything from the worst seat in the house!

Both of these things can be true:

  • It is an incredible spectacle
  • It is a terrible way to watch basketball

The NCAA is not going to bring the Final Four back to a basketball stadium any time soon. Our complaining will not help. Money is too powerful.

However, let this be your warning for the next time that you choose to attend. Do not get seats higher than the lower bowl unless you are on the 50-yard-line or prepared to watch the game on your phone.
