Plenty of college football fans expect Florida to improve under new coach Jon Sumrall. Professional bettors apparently looked at the same roster and schedule and responded by hammering the Under hard enough to knock an entire win off the Gators’ total at some sportsbooks.
Professional bettor Corbie Craig told FOX Sports that Florida Under 7.5 wins “got blasted,” with some books subsequently dropping the number to 6.5. That is not your buddy firing $20 on a preseason hunch. A full-game move in a season win total is the betting market loudly announcing that people whose money sportsbooks respect think something is wrong.
Sharp Bettors Really Do Not Trust Florida
The market effectively removed an entire possible Florida victory from the price after the early action came pouring in.
Craig actually likes Sumrall, who arrived after going 20-8 in two seasons at Tulane. His skepticism centers much more on what Sumrall inherited.
Florida finished 4-8 last season, fired Billy Napier and lost quarterback DJ Lagway to Baylor. Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo has since won the starting job, giving Sumrall a new quarterback while he also attempts to repair an offensive line that enters September as perhaps the biggest concern on the roster.
That is not merely a gambler searching for something to complain about.
Florida lost its three highest-graded starting offensive linemen from last season, and PFF identified the trenches as the Gators’ biggest weakness entering 2026. Only four returning linemen logged snaps last season, accounting for a little more than 41% of the position group’s workload.
Sumrall himself has spent months publicly challenging that room.
Basically, if Florida is going to make sharp bettors look stupid, the big guys up front are going to have to help.
The Schedule Is Not Exactly Offering Free Wins
Then there is the schedule, which appears to have been assembled by someone holding a longstanding grudge against Gainesville.
After opening against Florida Atlantic and Campbell, the Gators visit Auburn, host Ole Miss, travel to Missouri and South Carolina, then head to Texas before facing Georgia in Atlanta.
Florida still has Oklahoma, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Florida State waiting after that.
Craig also questioned whether Florida is spending at the same level as the SEC’s top programs when it comes to assembling talent, another issue that becomes considerably more important when the schedule provides almost no margin for roster deficiencies.
There is still plenty to like. Sumrall is one of college football’s fastest-rising coaches, Florida has legitimate skill-position talent, and the program has enough blue-chip players that a turnaround would hardly qualify as Indiana-level sorcery.
But preseason betting markets are supposed to account for optimism.
The people attacking Florida’s number apparently thought 7.5 wins contained way too much of it.
Some sportsbooks now need the Gators to reach seven victories just to beat the Over.
Before Week 1 has even arrived, the sharp money has already handed Sumrall his first opponent.
