Titusville defeated Oviedo to begin the high school football season in Florida. It was one of the biggest wins in recent program history.
However, the last minute the fourth quarter was marred by controversy.
Florida high school football officials called a penalty as time expired that set up a game-winning field goal. The clock wouldn’t’ve stopped without the flag!
Titusville beat Oviedo to start the high school football season at 1-0.
Established in 1927, Titusville High School enrolls ~1,300 students in Grades 9-12. It is located in Titusville, Florida, near Cape Canaveral. Oviedo High School enrolls ~2,200 students. It is located 30 miles east of Titusville, closer to Orlando.
These two high school football programs compete on different levels of the Florida High School Athletic Association. The Terriers are in Class 3A, Region 2, District 8. The Lions are in Class 5A, Region 2, District 5. They played against each other on Friday.
Titusville, coming off of a 5-6 record in 2025, pulled a major upset against Oviedo, which finished at 8-3 last season. The game went down to the wire.
The Lions held a one-point lead over the Terriers with less than one minute remaining in the fourth quarter. The Terriers drove down the field inside the red zone. They were 10 yards out from the end zone. It was do or die.
A questionable officiating decision allowed the game-winning field goal.
Although Titusville did not have any timeouts remaining, the offense decided not to stop the clock with a spike to set up a game-winning field goal attempt. 15 seconds… 14 seconds… 13 seconds… The Terriers finally snapped the ball and ran to the right.
It was a questionable coaching decision. The clock continued to roll. The game was going to end. Oviedo was going to win.
And then the officials threw a flag. A second flag came in just moments later.
One of Titusville’s players received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for barking at a referee. It was a 15-yard penalty. Instead of the game ending at 22-21, the officials also put five seconds back on the clock. The Terriers had the chance to run another play!
They ran their kicker onto the field, snapped the ball before it was whistled to play, and made the game-winning field goal.
This might be the biggest Titusville win in the last 5 years ?

Never in my nature to criticize the officials but how they handle this DIRECTLY changed the outcome of the game.

They had no more timeouts. Opponent ran the ball and got stopped. Player cursed at ref, calls unsportsmanlike which stops the clock. Why are we rewarding this act by… pic.twitter.com/z64Jh5EDGd
Titusville was rewarded for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Terriers chose to run the ball instead of spiking for a field goal but one of their players was called for a penalty. Instead of taking the loss, the penalty allowed them to kick the game-winner. Not great.
