Mariner head coach Tyran Jones was placed on administrative leave with less than two weeks until the first game of the high school football season. The Lee County School District and local police are actively investigating an alleged hazing incident during a recent team-building event.
It is unclear as to exactly when this incident might’ve occurred or what happened.
Regardless of what is decided by the investigation, this creates a major distraction right before the start of the high school football season. A team that was hoping to take a big step forward is now in disarray.
Mariner High School football begins the regular season in less than two weeks.
Established in 1987, Mariner High School is located in Cape Coral, Florida. It enrolls ~1,000 students in Grades 9-12.
The Fighting Tritons offer 15 varsity sports. They compete in Florida High School Athletic Association Class 5A, District 11.
Tyran Jones was hired as the head football coach in 2025. Mariner finished at 3-7 during its first season of a complete program rebuild. The Tritons only finished with a winning record in four of the last 22 years. The hope is to return to relevance sooner than later.
They are scheduled to begin the 10-game regular season in Week 0 against Cypress Lake on August 14. Practice got underway at the end of July. Their first game of the season is less than two weeks away.

The Lee County School District placed Mariner High School football coach Tyran Jones on administrative leave amid an ongoing investigation. It stems from an alleged hazing incident at recent “lock-in” where players were required to stay at the school. The investigation is two-fold. Both Lee County and the Cape Coral police department are looking into the undisclosed incident.
Lee County school board chair Armor Persons issued the following statement:
“As Chair of the Lee County School Board, I have been briefed that the district immediately initiated an investigation and placed the coach on administrative leave while that investigation is underway. That is the appropriate first step to protect the integrity of the investigation and ensure due process. I will not speculate or prejudge anyone before the investigation is complete. However, I can assure you that if district policies were violated or students were placed at risk, I fully expect appropriate accountability and corrective action.”
Persons cannot comment further on the investigation because the current administrative leave may eventually lead to a termination hearing. He is only able to confirm the root cause.
“Well, when it happened, we were notified by the attorney that there had been a suspension of a coach for an incident that happened with some football players, overnight, that. So that’s about all that as far as the details that I really know at this particular time.”
Jones did not attend the Mariner football program’s scheduled media session on July 28 due to what was explained as a scheduling conflict. It is unclear as to whether his absence stemmed from the ongoing investigation.
The timeline here could be an issue. The Tritons are currently without their head coach amid the uncertainty. According to the school district, players will get additional clarity on Tuesday.
“We will address the situation with the team (Tuesday) when they return to practice. They deserve to hear from school administrators and not the media about what actions are being taken and why. Once we have advised the team and their parents, we will release a statement.”
