There are few teams around the NFL that have invested as much in the quarterback position as the Indianapolis Colts over the past couple of years.

Their trade for Carson Wentz ended up costing them a 1st round pick and a 3rd round pick.

They were able to recoup that third round pick when they ended up trading Wentz to the Washington Commanders a year later, but quickly spent another 3rd rounder when they traded for Matt Ryan.

Unfortunately for the Colts, both of those trades yielded disappointing results. The Carson Wentz deal looked like it would work out for much of last season, but a brutal ending to the season that saw them eliminated from playoff contention in a blowout loss to the Jaguars led the team to move on.

The Matt Ryan trade was a disaster for the Colts. With Ryan under center, the Colts became one of the NFL’s worst offenses and he was eventually benched for both Sam Ehlinger and Nick Foles.

With the trades for rental quarterbacks not working out particularly well for the Colts, one of their former head coaches believes it is time for them to change their approach.

Chuck Pagano revealed that he believes the Colts need to make sure to get a franchise QB in the draft this year.

The Indianapolis Colts are lucky to have two teams picking in front of them that likely aren’t going to be taking quarterbacks this year, but they still may need to trade up to pick 1 to make sure they get their QB.

This year’s draft class is much stronger than last year’s at QB and the Colts can absolutely get their franchise quarterback this year. They just may need to invest a bit more draft capital to make it happen.
