Syracuse wide receiver Calvin Russell suffered an Achilles tendon tear in spring practice ahead of his highly anticipated freshman season. It has not stopped him from practicing with the team.

The Orange wideout was spotted in pads catching passes on the sidelines while riding on a scooter. The poor optics created controversy on social media.

Head coach Fran Brown explained his reasoning for the practice appearance while speaking to the media on Sunday. He says he’s prioritizing Russell’s mental health.

Why did Calvin Russell practice after tearing his Achilles?

The injury was suffered in late March with the Orange gearing up for the 2026 season. He is out indefinitely as begins the recovery process.

Russell was the headliner in a 17-man recruiting class this past offseason. He boasts five-star status and was rated as the third-best pass catcher in his cycle.

The loss is a blow to a Syracuse football team looking to rebound from a 3-9 campaign. He was expected to see the field early. Now, his future for this coming season is unclear.

An Achilles tendon tear typically has a recovery time of around a year. Kobe Bryant returned from his 2013 setback in nine months’ time, though he suffered a subsequent knee injury soon after.

Kevin Durant’s recovery was closer to 15 months in 2019, though he admitted to not feeling 100% for nearly 700 days.

Given the severity of Achilles injuries, a long rehab is to be expected. For that reason, many were shocked to see Calvin Russell back on the field in April.

Fran Brown explained his reasoning.

Russell’s presence at Syracuse football practice created a stir on social media. Many were critical of the coaching staff for putting him back on the field, even in a limited capacity.

For the most part, the wideout simply caught lob passes on the sidelines. His training was far from rigorous. Still, comments from college football viewers flooded the internet.

“This is dumb,” said one follower. “Like get in the film room rather than this. There is no chance of him catching lob passes in a game like that. He’s not working on anything here.”

Another echoed the sentiment, writing, “His time and energy might better be spent shadowing the position coaches or the analytics team. He doesn’t need to be anywhere where he could be potentially reinjured by an inadvertent collision.”

Fran Brown understood the ramifications of putting Russell back at practice. He says it was a decision made by both the player and coach.

Mental health of a college student was more important in Brown’s eyes.

“(The decision) was a mixture of both of ours,” he said. “It was really my idea. I’m not about to let him sit in a room, by himself…

“I’m responsible for his mental… I’m responsible for him feeling appreciated… Why would I have him just sit on the sideline? There’s nothing wrong with his hands. I want to make sure he keeps being active. He’s involved in everything.”

Brown does not want to lose Russell. He wants him to feel a part of the team despite the injury. He’s determined to protect his mental outlook with a practice plan that has clear guardrails.

Brown believes it is in the best interest of his young talent to stay involved. Hopefully, Calvin Russell can recover fully from his Achilles tear to make a Syracuse football debut in the future.
